EDMO updates - 3rd Edition, May 2021

EDMO WEEK: REGISTRATIONS NOW OPEN

Mark your calendar: from 7-11 June, EDMO will host its first annual conference, 'EDMO Week: United Against Disinformation'. EDMO Week will focus on key topics including the need for a multi-stakeholder approach, fact-checking, and media literacy. There will also be opportunities for informal side events, and networking activities. Register now!

MAPPING FACT-CHECKING ACTIVITIES

EDMO has published its first repository on Fact-checking Initiatives in the EU (and UK). The repository features a map with names and locations of relevant organisations and a table with extended information. If you would like to contribute to the map (e.g. by providing additional data or pointing out missing initiatives), you can get in touch via mapping@edmo.eu.

DISCUSSING PROMISES AND PERILS OF AI AND FACT-CHEKING

The EDMO workshop brought together private companies developing AI-based fact-checking tools with fact-checkers, journalists, academics and policy-makers. Participants discussed the benefits and risks of using these tools and shared experiences about best practices, limitations and risks they have encountered in their work. A report will be published soon. Stay tuned!

Successful FIRST ‘THE ABC OF FACT-CHECKING’ TRAINING

During 'The ABC of Fact-Checking'-training experts from AFP (Grégoire Lemarchand, Nina Lamparski and Sami Acef) gave insights into the techniques, challenges and possibilities of fact-checking. It also featured contributions from Prof. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism) and Giovanni Zagni (Pagella Politica).

SNIPPETS

Survey report on Covid-19 vaccines and disinformation: In January, EDMO launched a survey among fact-checkers with focus on disinformation and the Covid19 vaccine and vaccination campaigns. The final report provides an overview of fact-checking activities and strategies, and shows how they relate to initiatives by governments and/or public health institutions in the respective countries.

Information and media literacy:  To contribute to the state of media literacy in Europe, EDMO is conducting a mapping and analysis exercise to examine existing European media literacy policies and initiatives, and provide a roadmap for its activities in the field. If you are interested in providing information, please contact edmo@eui.eu.

EDMO accepts advisory role in European Media and Information Fund: Read more about EDMO's independent advisory role in the formulation of calls, and evaluation and selection of projects in the newly launched European Media and Information Fund.
